Chapter Two

The First Decade

In our genes, only 2% of our DNA keeps us from looking like beetles. Scientists call the other 98%, junk DNA, because they have no idea what it's good for. Perhaps these percentages measure off the junk DNA in our lives also. Two percent of the time, we have those special moments when we fall in love, buy a house, and have a child. But we devote the other 98% of the time to eating cornflakes, commuting, and tying our shoes (all necessary in order to get to the good stuff).

Two percent of my life pushed me to find the answers in Appendix E. Outside forces and the accumulation of evidence for the theory were hidden in all the twists and turns scattered amongst years of unrelated activity, the 98%. If you'd like, you can play a little game while reading the even-numbered chapters. Just mark any links in the chain which you think led to the conclusion in Appendix E before you even know the full theory. Then after you've read Appendix E, come back and see how many you'd spotted correctly. The 2% won't be easy to find in the middle of all the breakfast food. But let's get started.
