Chapter Six

The Third decade

In the spring of my junior year at St. John's, we went on a chorus tour in February followed by a band tour with me playing the piano part in Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue. At the Stillwater Prison, one of our stops, the warden said not to worry; the guards will seat the murderers in the back. That's nice. I wonder who booked this tour. We also performed at the St. Cloud Reformatory, not to say that all of our concerts were behind bars. But when those iron gates clanged shut behind us, we all felt uneasy even though we knew we were there only temporarily. But hearing one of the inmates singing our school fight-song raised some concern. A graduate of St. John's?

In spite of these extra activities, I finished the shelter in the woods by late spring and hoped to solve the mystery of the screaming woman. Late one night, I dressed up in rough clothes, picked up a hunting knife, and set out. Even with no moon, I found the shelter and settled down on a bed of pine needles.
