To our horror, another long-time pal disappears right in front of us, and we feel a jerk towards where he had been. We decided we'd better ask our god, Kapp, for an explanation.
Beginning of the meditation --------
US: We remember in the old days (days?) when we first saw a nit appear out of nowhere, which was weird.
KAPP: It's all quite natural. As nits you are all born somewhere randomly.
US: What causes that?
KAPP: Nothing. It's an uncaused event. On Earth, scientists studying radium found an example of this kind of event. Without any cause at all, some atom of radium decays into another kind randomly, and no one can predict or control which atom will do that.
US: Why does someone's birth push us away?
KAPP: I was hoping you wouldn't ask that, but here goes: Your birth is not really something coming out of nothing. It's a split and works like this: Before you became a nit, you existed as something nobody could measure, as close to nothing as anything can be. We can say you were a nothing, about the size of nothing, space linked with anti-space which adds up to nothing, and ...
US: Hold it right there. Anti-space?!
KAPP: Anti-space is all part of the whole picture. In your travels, you'll find electrons and positrons, protons and antiprotons, neutrinos and antineutrinos, north and south poles, matter and antimatter, etc. Space and anti-space may be the root of these opposites; I haven't decided.
US: Well, OK, I guess. Go on.
