Eventually, at the speed of light, the mass of the rocket will be infinite, and the engines have to develop infinite power to get anywhere. Because of the power problem, nothing physical can reach the speed of light.

4) We see another spaceship crossing in front of us going nine-tenths the speed of light. Here comes another one from the opposite direction, and it's going nine-tenths the speed of light too. (It's getting crowded out here.) According to our calculations, they are passing each other faster than the speed of light. That's all right. However, if they try to measure how fast they are passing each other, their relative speeds will be slower than the speed of light.

5) When an apple hangs from a tree, it has potential energy (potential to do work). Energy can't be destroyed, only changed into some other kind of energy, so as the apple falls, that potential energy gradually changes to kinetic (moving) energy. When the apple hits the ground, the kinetic energy will change to some heat and sound energy, so speed adds to the total energy of the apple.

In some conditions, the apple can be destroyed, in which case, it can become energy. We'll call the mass, M, and the Energy, E, so we can write E = M, but we need something added to make this formula always work. We can relate the apple's speed to the speed of light giving us an absolute base. Einstein found the proper value: E (Energy) equals M (Mass) times C (the speed of light) times itself, E = MC2. A little mass converts into a lot of energy, and although we said energy can't be destroyed, it can change back into matter.

Time, space, and mass have gotten all mushy. Light is the new absolute, and no matter what we do, it's going to take its own sweet time at 186,000 miles per second.
