Chapter Three covered the large end of the universe: the stars, planets, high speeds, and what's weird about them. Now we'll get into the very small end: the atoms, electrons, tiny spaces, and what's absurd there. Perhaps these theories don't fit our common sense because we live somewhere in between these extremes.
With Relativity, we used pretty common words from everyday life: light, curve, time, and space. But now we're going to use uncommon words and talk about subjects we hardly ever bring up around the water-cooler.
Starting at our level, we can still use our sense of sight, but then we have to drill our way down and depend on machines and instruments. If you were having trouble reading the newspaper because your arms were too short, you bought some glasses. You're not seeing the newspaper directly anymore, but you trust that your glasses don't change the words before they get to your eye. Not too many cooks stick a hand in a turkey to see if it's done; the meat thermometer works just fine.
