Chapter Twelve

The Sixth Decade

------The Chernobyl nuclear power plant suffers a meltdown. Radioactive clouds cover Europe and travel as far as northeastern United States.

To finally overcome gravity, I took up flying,
an ideal time because nobody was dependent on me for food and shelter anymore. Also, I didn't think I'd have a fear of flying because I wasn't really enjoying life much yet because of pain (didn't mention this little piece of information to the folks who rented me the plane).

Some flying tidbits:

1. A line from an official military crash report read, "The pilot descended to a level below that of the surrounding terrain."

2. A good landing is one you can walk away from; a great landing is when the aircraft is reusable.

3. We sometimes call the propeller, a "fan" because its main purpose is to keep the pilot cool. If you don't believe me, just turn it off and watch him start to sweat.
