Chapter Ten

The Fifth Decade

The consulting firm sent me to an insurance group, a good place to learn a lot since the company had so many different departments: payroll, actuarial, claims, quotes, and policies. In the early days of computers, we used to code programs on sheets of paper and send them to a key-punch area. That group punched holes into cards, and the computer read the holes, which is another piece of evidence for Chapter Nine (space is just as important as matter). But now, at this company, we typed programs directly into the computer.

One of the first mornings at the company, I asked the wrong person a question. He then sat down by my desk and began to answer. And answer. And answer. No amount of hinting drove him away, and the other programmers were too amused to rescue me (thanks, fellas). This guy didn't stop even when I took out my bag lunch and started eating. Finally, at quitting time, he decided to go away. I learned a lot that day, but unfortunately, it had nothing to do with insurance.
