A cousin of mine (the same one who bit me) gave me a couple of science-fiction magazines. Reading wasn't much fun yet, but this was different. My favorite movies were about science fiction, although I noticed that type missing from the theaters for a few years. Everyone should check out these adventure stories; logical fantasy is the kind of thinking we need to do. Of course by now, much of that science fiction has become--science.
One of the best toys I ever got was an Erector set with screws, girders, plates, wheels, gears, and an electric motor for building all kinds of things. Since we didn't have electricity, I had to go over to my grandparents' house to use the motor. Like many other kids who had this toy, I tried breaking the laws of physics with it and really came close with some versions of perpetual-motion machines. Trying to build one of these was a popular sport ever since the machine age began. After a little push, the contraption was supposed to run forever with no outside energy needed. The lack of electricity in our house probably drove my passion for these; there was no outside energy.
