  1. The eye is another amazing development going across species. It's seems impossible to have such a thing occur by chance, but little by little it did. You can imagine a light-sensitive skin being a big advantage. Forming a cup helps to show the direction of the light, and filling the cup with water puts some focus to it. Eventually, closing around the water and separating the focusing part (the lens) gives us the eye. If you think these steps sound preposterous, did you know all these stages of an eye can be seen today in different sea species53? They may develop complete eyes over the next few millions of years.
  2. The miniscule genes bring about all these fantastic things. Many genes give information about what an animal should look like, but other genes control when the information should be used. These controller genes say this cell will become a hair, muscle, or bone cell, and that group of cells will form a knee, an ear, or a heart. What a disaster if these rule makers are out of whack! It won't then be a proud parent who says, "Our son just grew another whole foot."

Gradual changes in the environment make for a slow rate of evolution. Sudden disasters speed up the changes.
