The thought triggers neurons in the brain to fire, electrical currents run down to muscles, and up goes the arm. Still, the spirit somehow links to the physical chemicals of the brain.
We've always assumed we can tell when someone is alive. Is there a spirit operating in there somewhere? We used to check for breathing and assumed if someone took in air, he was alive. In fact, the Latin word for breath is spiritus: The two, breath and spirit, were the same thing. Another check was the pulse because pumping blood meant the body still had life, a spirit inside. Now with machinery attached, we can do those tasks for the body, so we have to see if the patient's brain is alive (neurons firing). All of these examples indicate that spirit always links to some kind of measurable, physical activity.
Eventually, we should be able to relate these electrical effects to particular thoughts and feelings. We already do some mapping with lie detector tests and electroencephalographs. And recently, I've heard that someone has already tried thought-reading experiments. All this activity is similar to measuring the weight of an electron by its effects (something else we can't see or experience directly). However, we'll take a look at some science studies that actually dealt with spirit before we dive into TTOMTE.
For the next four sections, I'm going to use information from The God Gene by Dr. Dean Hamer, a geneticist. That title upset some people when the book came out in 2004 because it seemed to say we're hardwired to have faith. However, we do have evidence our DNA affects our level of spirituality; in other words, our tendency towards spirituality may be inherited.
