FROM US TO SUPERHUMAN

After trillions of years, why will evolution stop working now? We are, after all, another group that wouldn't be here if evolution had stopped at the wood tick.

Every species in the past has always produced more offspring than can possibly survive. Guess what; we've done it again. Thanks to improvements in medicine and sanitation, we add one hundred million humans to the Earth each year. By the way, twenty-seven thousand species disappear in the same timeframe. We're back to fighting over the last few berries in our part of the orchard, only now, the clubs we use can wipe out the whole garden. We might have the type of war where nature is back in the business of picking through the leftovers. Can humans survive the next asteroid or self-made disaster and evolve into something higher? A few can possibly survive nuclear war if it weren't total because there can be people with a combination of genes right now capable of withstanding radiation poisoning.

It has taken thousands of years for some species to change enough to survive a new situation. Now that we may learn how to manipulate DNA, it's possible we can control and speed up the process, but we can only guess what's best. Suppose we get a few humans built to handle radioactivity, but instead, toxic bacteria rise out of the sea. That's why we didn't set up CHANCE and SELECTION columns in this section. Leaving nature alone, we can't even guess what a species will evolve into next. Yet.

Anyway, is there any use speculating about future evolution? Do we have any evidence evolution continues past our stage?

In order to explore our future, we need to see if evolution still operates.
