CAROL VARIATIONS ---- My piano partner and I had trouble finding good two-piano music to use for the Christmas programs at the insurance company. The music was either too simple, unimaginative, or practically unplayable. That's when I offered to write a few pieces for us. The songs below are the result of that endeavor and were written over a six year period. We found reasonable two-piano arrangements for The Nutcracker Suite which contained six dances, so from then on we alternated, playing one of Tschaikovsky's one year and one of mine the next. That way we could play a different piece each year for twelve years before we repeated. By that time people hardly remembered we played it before. These are not simply arrangements but are actually music where the themes are developed using variation form. (See chapter 16, page 303.)

SOLO ---- Liebestraume means love dreams. The piece begins with a very short intro followed by the main melody with a rising and falling sound. The intro sound is expanded a bit before the main theme returns more forcefully. Again the intro sound is developed further followed by the main theme in all its flamboyance. Finally the intro has become a quiet melody in its own right, and the piece closes with the first theme.
