We use practical beliefs every day of our lives, and for us, a belief can be:
1. A time saver: We believe the glass of milk on the table is safe to drink. We don't have time to test every carton we buy to see if someone's poisoned it.
2. A sanity saver: We believe a meteor or a grand piano will not likely fall on us, so we don't have to keep looking up there in fear.
3. A peace keeper: We believe store clerks speak the truth when they say things like "That'll be $10.24 with tax," so we don't riot in the store when we have only $10.19 on us.
4. A comfort giver: We believe a woman when she says, "It's not you; it's me."
Beliefs are useful for common everyday living, so it's all right to believe in something we can't or don't bother proving. After all, thinking something is true in the absence of evidence defines the essence of belief. And since scientific theories can't be proven, they are beliefs too (although based on reason and evidence).
