After the Lightning God, he told his followers about the Sun God, the Moon God, the God of Hunting and Fishing, all the way down to the God of Shoe Repair. (Hinduism also had many gods.)
The above story describes only one possible way immortality and reincarnation concepts surfaced. Perhaps instead, someone awoke from a ten day coma, too long for a nap, or maybe the dead visited many people in dreams. Perhaps some girl's father died, and to cheer her up, someone told her the walking, talking part of her father went away to live in a better place; in those tough times, anywhere else was a better place to live. A tribal head possibly discovered a way to get his timid hunters to go out after a tiger. The chief proclaimed, "Don't worry; if the tiger eats you, you will henceforth live as a tiger. And you shall be called Tony."
When the Jews arrived around five thousand years ago, many gods still hovered around, but for the Jews it came down to one God, and they were His chosen people. Golda Meier, a past Israeli prime minister, wasn't so sure being chosen was such a great gift. Besides the Holocaust, she noticed Moses led the Jews to the only land in the Middle East where there was no oil. The Hebrews believed that prophets, at least, came back. Even the early Catholic Church accepted reincarnation until a council finally voted against the idea.
Although a few people can accept living only once and then dying, most want to think otherwise; the latter want to assume we'll have reward or punishment after we die (well, reward anyway). For many, life brings only pain, and discarding the chance of a better place will lead to despair and suicide. Somehow, science must giveth what it hath takeneth away.
