Sacred beliefs are something else altogether; they are supposedly beyond questioning. In fact, people think hanging on to a sacred belief no matter what new evidence comes along is a virtue. It's even more virtuous to get someone else to believe the same things. People try to live the way their faith advises them, and a sacred belief affects a culture in a big way. Therefore, it might be a good idea to question sacred beliefs once in a while too. Shouldn't there be some evidence for them, and shouldn't they at least be reasonable?
Try this brand new religion on for size, revealed in the sacred truths of The Church of the Holy Roaches:
I. Cockroaches are angels in disguise.
II. If you pet a cockroach, God, the corner gas station, will reward you with a cigarette holder under your pillow.
III. If you stick the holder into your eye, you will hear what a rainbow tastes like.
(You can tell these doctrines are sacred because they're listed using Roman numerals.)
Too farfetched? Not worth keeping? Let's try another one:
I. We wait for John Frum, our messiah and king of America, to come again.
II. Our high priest, Nambas, can speak to the messiah.
III. Nambas talks to John by chanting in front of a wooden box.
IV. The chant will bring down good things from the skies to the people.
V. When disaster strikes the islands, John Frum will return on February fifteenth to save us all.
VI. Every year, we must hold a ceremony of welcome on February fifteenth for John.
