So far we've brought together theories about major parts of the universe. Now, we'll put in the final pieces and see where spirit and God fit into the picture.
Wait a minute. Won't a study involving spiritual life be outside the range of scientific investigation? Shouldn't only religions be allowed to talk about God?
When the first creepy-crawlers started showing some signs of learning, fear, and attraction, the mysterious, spiritual side to nature became fair game. As animals got more complicated, the untouchable part evolved right along with them. We used to get criticized for thinking animals had feelings and thoughts like us, but lately that criticism has faded; animals are like us or how we were before. They are on their paths, evolving in every possible way, just as we did, only a little behind, or perhaps some of them aren't behind at all. For instance:
Not long ago, a news report came over the radio about a man attacked by sharks and bitten a couple of times. A pod of dolphins surrounded him and got him to shore safely, an amazing story, but we've heard similar reports about dolphins before. Suppose the human species gets wiped out tomorrow. What will a visitor to our planet find a billion years from now? Will some form of intelligent life be swimming and having a good time in the oceans? Perhaps a form that chose not to develop worthless scientific theories and telemarketing.
For the sake of immortality, people have held to the idea of a spirit separate from the body, but at the same time, we take for granted that the spirit somehow connects to the physical. Try to raise your arm. Look at that; it goes up. We think it's impossible to physically measure something like willpower, but a relationship does exist between the immeasurable desire and a physical thing like an arm. True, the connection is not quite so direct.
