Gender did matter with women scoring higher than men. I'm sure women weren't surprised by this result; I always thought they were somehow different.
Studying twins separated at birth is a common way to tell if heredity causes a particular effect or if culture does. These twins share DNA (heredity) but have a different upbringing (culture). To illustrate, we'll present a hypothetical case of alcohol addiction.
Dora and Laura both dislike alcohol and won't allow any in their homes. Dora's foster parents were atheists while Laura's were very religious. Aha, the taste for alcohol is in the genes; their backgrounds were so different. But there's more to the story: Dora's foster dad worked odd hours as a bartender, and Laura's foster parents taught her God won't love her if she drank. Aha, taste for alcohol is in the culture: Dora saw alcohol as the source of her dad's neglect, and Laura believed in a vengeful God. See how tricky twin studies can be?
In the 1980's, the University of Minnesota managed to collect files on fifty-three sets of identical twins and thirty-one sets of fraternal twins, all separated at birth. (Half of the DNA is the same in fraternal twins.) By checking religious beliefs and activities, Hamer's team found a pattern suggesting faith correlates to DNA. Later testing showed that genes related to spirituality rather than to religiousness. The religion chosen totally depends on upbringing and life experiences. We have no Muslim, Catholic, or Lutheran gene, only a spiritual gene. In fact, some high scorers didn't believe in a god at all.
