Chapter 15-Page 333
To see scientific evidence of evolution still working, simply look at what's going on in labs everywhere. We experiment with short-lived creatures, and these can have several generations of children and mutations while we watch. In fact, viruses impress us with their ability to evolve so quickly. In 1918, twenty-two million people died from a disease similar to the current bird flu. Today, a mutation allowing the bird flu to go from human to human can eliminate our species altogether.
What about the human species? Are we evolving? Are we smarter than early man? Not really. We have more things to know about, but our brains are hardly bigger. Besides our brain size, are we evolving other ways physically? We are bigger than the Knights of the Round Table, and we live longer. Does that mean we've evolved in recent times? No; evolution depends on an accident at the gene level. Better food and medicine can explain all the above bodily changes.
What about consciousness and higher values, are they evolving? Since we've started keeping history, we've gone through many cycles of advancement and decay, and we don't see much sign of progress in human nature. We've gone from love to holocausts, from peace to war, and right now, we have people willing to kill innocent men, women, and children for a religious cause. This is evolution?
You can come back by saying we have to look at the big picture. Slavery was common and accepted for five thousand years, up to about two hundred years ago, but now the practice is condemned around the world (although, two million are still enslaved each year in the sex trade). Democracies have replaced tyrannies in many places (more than one hundred fifty so far). Women are gaining ground, and human rights issues have crossed national boundaries.
